Bicycling in the Rain

2009.11.01 biking in the rain 1

Sometimes, the child in you just has to be released.  Frequently, Sr. Elaine, her family, and I enjoy nice long bike rides through Maryland.  We have so much fun seeing the nature and spending time together, all while getting exercise!

Well, this particular day that Sr. Elaine and I took a bike ride, we invited Patty, a new candidate.  It was also the day that the sky decided to open up.  What fell forth was not skittles and happiness, it was rain…pure rain!

Predicting fowl weather, we did pack some ponchos, for what it was worth.  Surprisingly, as we were riding along in the rain, I think my inner child started to smile.  Suddenly, the cold drops on my nose were no longer annoying.

I looked around and saw the water accumulating on leaves and the ground soaking up God’s nurturing moisture.  The clouds in the sky were deeper and richer in color, displaying the angry force that produces rain.  And the sound of the raindrops were as melodic and soothing as any sweet song.

Not only did I have fun and feel “silly” bike riding in the rain and getting muddy, but I again saw the world from the faith-filled eyes of a child…my inner child.

I hope that my companions enjoyed the ride as much as I did.  I know we certainly initiated Patty into Bon Secours!  Thank you, Lord, for the many blessings!!!

The Jesuit Guide to (ALMOST) EVERYTHING – A Spirituality for Real Life, by James Martin, SJ (2010)

James Martin, SJ quickly tell us, “…this book…is not a guide to understand everything about everything (thus the Almost). Rather, it’s a guide to discovering how God can be found in every dimension of your life. How God can be found in everything. And everyone, too.” (p. 7).   Martin, with his typical humorous style, lights [...]

Faith and Values

As I stumble through the house, looking for a book to pack, I wonder how many people go on vacation ill-prepared for the journey.  How many return physically, mentally, or spiritually exhausted?
Travel always seems to take a physical toll on a person…especially long trips.  Even a vacation can leave your energy zapped by the time you [...]

Sr. Pat says: HI Dionna, thank you for your comment. YOu are right, Church law requires that one be age 18 minimally, though most ocmmunities prefer that someone wait until they are at least age 21. One reason is the need for sufficient maturity, so that one understands what they are choosing and also "not" choosing. read more...
