Celebrating Earth Day

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

Sisters of Bon Secours celebrate Earth Day.

The monthly forum for the staff at the Leadership Office and Spiritual Center was held April 27 and included a discussion about the Sisters of Bon Secours Mission Focus Statement and a special ceremony honoring Earth Day.

Sister Rose Marie Jasinski, Country Leader, reviewed the Sisters of Bon Secours’ Mission Focus Statement, which was introduced in 2009:  We, Women of Healing, commit ourselves to defend and care for all of creation; to cry out with others against injustice and all that diminishes life on Earth.

Sr. Rose Marie shared, “For me this statement that we’ve adopted broadens the scope of our healing and caring mission to all of creation.”  She emphasized the importance of carrying out this mission in day to day life and work at the Leadership Office and Spiritual Center.  The staff also had a moment to share the various ways they care for all of creation and how the work environment benefits.  Employees shared different examples of how co-workers go above and beyond their the duties for guests.  They also pointed out the increased involvement in recycling efforts in the workplace and in their own homes.  These examples of caring, helping, and making a difference exemplify the Mission Focus Statement and ensure that everyone is working toward the same goal.

The discussion surrounding the Mission Focus Statement was the perfect introduction for the Earth Day celebration.  Staff made their way outside while singing a nature inspired hymn, Canticle of the Sun and participated in an Earth Day prayer service.   This prayer ended with the planting of a butterfly bush.  A butterfly house, built by Larry Kaskel, Operations Manager, was also placed near the bush.

A new butterfly house and butterfly bush commemorate Earth Day 2011.

The forum continued with regular department updates and birthday celebrations.  As it concluded, the staff was also presented with Spiritual Center coffee mugs, which promoted the Earth Day theme by providing an alternative to disposable plastic and paper cups.  Everyone was grateful for the opportunity to reflect on the Mission Focus Statement, celebrate Earth Day, and catch up with co-workers.

They say the opposite of war is not love…it is PEACE.  And I have to say that this video, actually it is a trailer for an independent film, certainly brings light to how strongly we should be waging a campaign for Peace.  What do you think? Here is an excerpt from the Global Zero website: [...]
