ARE YOU SEARCHING FOR A LIFE OF SERVICE TO HUMANITY?

In my work as vocation director for the Sisters of Bon Secours, I have the privilege of talking to women about their plans for the future. In these exchanges I hear recurring themes:

  • I am looking to share my faith as an integral part of what I do
  • I want to make a difference in the world
  • I would like to work with others in support of a common vision
  • I wish my work to be in support of the poor and marginalized
  • I want my life to have meaning, providing a positive influence on those I work with and those I help
  • I want to have a sense of belonging

As a single Catholic woman of faith, do YOU sometimes wish you could find a way to combine your faith and your daily work in a more meaningful way? If your answer is yes, what have you done thus far to explore this possibility?

Talk with someone who understands

There are faith based organizations and not-for-profit groups throughout the country that serve the needs of the underserved. Talking with them, you can gain an understanding of their mission and vision and how their organizations are structured. Asking enough questions may give you an understanding of how you might best fit in to their overall needs.

Another viable option is to seek an understanding of religious life in a community of women dedicated to a common vision, able to support your gifts, one such as the Sisters of Bon Secours.

Sometimes women are shy or unaware about exploring this possibility, but it may be where you find the answers you need. Religious life is unique in that it affords you a chance to serve God’s people with others while sharing life in a community environment that supports your efforts on a daily basis. You can find a sense of belonging in your work and your community life. You will find your prayer life becomes an integral part of who you are every day.

Seeking spiritual direction on a regular basis

Many people find it really helpful to meet with a spiritual director who can help them understand how God is acting in their life. For a referral to a Catholic spiritual director in your area, go to www.sdiworld.org, or call your parish priest or a local Catholic retreat center. They will be glad to suggest directors. For those exploring a religious vocation working with a spiritual director is a critical part of the journey to determine what God is calling them to in life. Meeting with a vocation director can also be helpful in understanding if God is calling you to religious life.

Where do you start?

What questions do you have about a life of service or about religious life? What is your reaction to what you just read? What do you want to know more about? Feel free to begin a dialogue with me or one of the other sisters who shared their life with you on camera. We will be glad to help you as you explore your life of faith and service.

Begin the process by e-mailing our Vocation Director.
