Many grateful senior citizens can now list their home address at 3020 Garrison Boulevard, Baltimore–The Wayland Village Senior Apartments.  This new 89 unit apartment building opened on May 20 with a ribbon cutting and building consecration ceremony.  This Bon Secours project offers affordable rental housing to seniors with one and two bedroom apartments.  The Wayland Village apartment building is the latest addition in the Bon Secours housing projects, bringing the total seniors, adults with disabilities and families served to 650!

Samuel Ross, M.D., CEO of Bon Secours Baltimore Health System, said, “When the Sisters of Bon Secours came to Baltimore in 1881, they knew they were starting a new ministry, but could not have imagined what that ministry would lead to in the 21st century.  Today we celebrate that we are blessed to offer seniors many wonderful apartments that are part of a true community.  This indeed is ‘Good … continue reading…

This summer the Sisters of Bon Secours will be hosting a short-term service project for young, single women, ages 18 to 35, who have a willingness to serve those in need. Project Good Help will be held in July. Volunteers will need to arrive in the evening on Thursday, the 21st and will finish up in the morning on Tuesday the 26th. The women will stay at the Sister’s headquarters in Marriottsville, MD and work in nearby Baltimore city at a community garden, a drop-in center for women, a family support/learning center and a senior housing center.  This will be an excellent opportunity to serve the less fortunate and make a difference in the community.

During this service opportunity, the volunteers will be able to share their experience with sisters and apply it to their own lives.  Each day will also be bathed in prayer and reflection.

One of our Bon Secours ministries is asking for your help.  The following is a letter from the Executive Director of Bon Secours of Maryland Foundation.

 Dear Friends of Bon Secours,

On Friday, June 25, 40 young women ages 17 – 21 who are actively pursuing a GED and have demonstrated strong advancement academically will be given the opportunity to attend their prom at the Country Inn Suites in Annapolis.

All of these young women are success stories. While every story is unique, the majority of these young women grew up in foster care, dropped out of school by their freshman year, and have at least one child under the age of 4.

But that’s just the beginning of the story. All of these young women participate in Bon Secours’ Family Support Center which provides GED preparation, parenting and life skills training, case management and counseling, financial planning workshops, and job readiness training. The goal of the Family Support Center is provide young families with the resources to become economically self sufficient and to put them on the path to achieving their career and life … continue reading…

I have to commend Shannon Curran, our Volunteer Director, for the wonderful article she wrote that faces injustice head-on.  I hope you enjoy her article as much as I did:
One measure of the difference between my two Baltimore neighborhoods is six miles.   Another measure is 20 years of life.

Born in the neighborhoods of 21210?  You can expect to live 82.9 years.  Born in 21201 near Hollins Market?  You can expect to live 62.5 years.  Unbelievably absurd and, unfortunately, believably true.

These figures come from the Baltimore City Health Department’s and JHU Bloomberg School’s Health Profile of 2008.  The data was compiled from 2002-2006 and, within that timeframe, I actually lived in both neighborhoods.  While my home has been in 21210 for the past few years, my work with our volunteers occurs in 21201.  I drive between these two neighborhoods several days each week.

Depending on which direction I am headed, I can imagine either losing or gaining around three years of life per mile.  That’s right, three years of life per mile.  For over ten years now, … continue reading…
