Affirming the Spirit of the Sponsoring Congregations
Published: Sisters Academy of Baltimore Newsletter – Volume 7, Issue 1

Our students are reminded every day of the four groups of Catholic sisters who founded and continue to sponsor Sisters Academy of Baltimore. First, the girls interact with sisters who work at the school. The Academy’s president, principal, eighth grade homeroom and lead math teacher, eighth grade art teacher, and librarian are sisters from two of the four congregations of religious women.

On the walls throughout the building, students see symbols of the sisters, including a picture of the foundress of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, a statue of the foundress of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, a Mercy cross that stands for the Sisters of Mercy, and a sculpture of potter’s hands working … continue reading…

Please pray for those in our country who cannot experience the independence they deserve.

When we celebrate Independence Day, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain, we generally focus on barbeque, fireworks, and parades.

This year, as you attend to those holiday rituals, be sure to take the time to pray for those in our country that are currently fighting for their independence…perhaps fighting for their lives, for their survival.

Right now, in OUR country (not only in other countries), there are young people being held captive as slaves to the immorality of man. They are unable to enjoy the freedoms that our military men and women fight to provide. They are unable to make their own decisions, as we all enjoy. They are being trafficked against their will.

The spirituality of the Sisters of Bon Secours encompasses the charism of compassion, healing, and … continue reading…

On Wednesday, June 2nd, the Sisters Academy of Baltimore had its 3rd commencement ceremony.  The photo above is of all 14 graduates(4 more than last year).  The photo below is of Sister Alice standing with the recipient of the Sisters of Bon Secours award which was presented to the student who demonstrated our values which included being “Good Help To Those In Need.” The young lady who won this award is Morgan Bell.  It was a lovely event, the church was filled with lots of enthusiastic parents and supporters cheering each graduate throughout the services.

All of the girls have been accepted to top high schools in the area.  We all can be proud for having played a small part in their education and growth.

One of our Bon Secours ministries is asking for your help.  The following is a letter from the Executive Director of Bon Secours of Maryland Foundation.

 Dear Friends of Bon Secours,

On Friday, June 25, 40 young women ages 17 – 21 who are actively pursuing a GED and have demonstrated strong advancement academically will be given the opportunity to attend their prom at the Country Inn Suites in Annapolis.

All of these young women are success stories. While every story is unique, the majority of these young women grew up in foster care, dropped out of school by their freshman year, and have at least one child under the age of 4.

But that’s just the beginning of the story. All of these young women participate in Bon Secours’ Family Support Center which provides GED preparation, parenting and life skills training, case management and counseling, financial planning workshops, and job readiness training. The goal of the Family Support Center is provide young families with the resources to become economically self sufficient and to put them on the path to achieving their career and life … continue reading…

Sister Mary Catherine Rogers, passed away on Wednesday May 5, 2010 following a brief illness.  After completing her novitiate, Sr. Mary Catherine, a graduate of Bon Secours School of Nursing in Baltimore, MD, served in Bon Secours Hospital’s Labor and Delivery,  her department in Baltimore before receiving a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Catholic University of America.

She went on to serve in ministries in Richmond, VA and Grosse, Point, MI. Sr. Mary Catherine later returned to Baltimore just after her 25th jubilee, and in October 1983, she was elected as a councilor to the Congregation Team in Rome, Italy.

Many will remember Sr. Mary Catherine as the Sponsor representative on the Board of Directors at St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Charleston and as Sr. Vice President of Sponsorship at Bon Secours Venice Hospital in Venice, Florida.

Sr. Mary Catherine was a nursing instructor in the School of Nursing and many a nurse today owe their nursing license to her because  her teaching methods were so thorough.

She loved the charism of BonSecours.  Sharing … continue reading…

I received another update message from Sister Elaine in South Africa:
Hi everyone,

The clinic finally opened after being closed for the Christmas holiday.  The first day back wasn’t too busy, but next Tuesday is already is packed full now that the folks know we’re open again.

Only a little more than a week till I get back.  While it’s been a wonderful experience here, I am looking forward to coming home!

Love,

Sister Elaine
