Srs. Pat Dowling and Fran Gorsuch attended Baltimore’s Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS) conference January 21-23 to connect with young women and share the mission of the Sisters of Bon Secours.  The conference, also sponsored by the Sisters of Bon Secours, was held in four U.S. cities and attracted thousands of young adults.  College students were invited to learn more about answering God’s call and encouraged to discover all of the gifts and talents God has provided.  This year students from sixteen colleges and universities attended the Baltimore conference.

Students at the conference were able to hear renowned speakers in the Catholic community speak about important topics including finding fulfillment in life and how to incorporate faith into their busy lives.  In addition, students attended a special pre-screening of Emilio Estevez’s new film “The Way” about hardships, everlasting bonds, and what it means to be a citizen of the … continue reading…

World AIDS Day is celebrated on the first day of December and is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV Infection.  It is a day to remember those we have lost to this horrible disease, as well as vow to save as many lives as we can, now, and in the future, through awareness and prevention.  In the past decade alone, AIDS awareness campaigns have successfully saved millions of lives worldwide.

Statistically, we may be saving lives, but until the day that the disease is fully eradicated, the threat remains.  According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 33.3 million people living with HIV, including 2.5 million children. During 2009 some 2.6 million people became newly infected with the virus and an estimated 1.8 million people died from AIDS.  HIV/AIDS is a threat to men, women and children on all continents around the world.

Travel, cleaning, preparation, sleeping arrangements, laundry, and mental anxiety.  And don’t forget the turkey and all of the trimmings.  Add to all of this “normal” Thanksgiving stress the dread and anxiety associated with reuniting with family members who might not share the same religious beliefs or political opinions, or who fester a lifetime of pain and anger and it can make for a LONG day.

What about those suffering from a lost job, economic instability, death of a loved one, or a new diagnosis of cancer?  Tragic, life-altering events don’t just disappear because it is a “special” day on the calendar.  Sometimes, it seems worse during the holidays.

A woman I spoke to recently admitted that she found it hard to give thanks when everything in her life seemed to be falling apart.  Even though she could find gratitude in the small things like the fact that her car starts when she needs to go to work, and that she has … continue reading…

“Simple Truths We Learn In Life”
by Sister Mary Magdalen
Truth #2:

Expand your knowledge and broaden your horizons.  Even if you think the education will be useless or pointless…you never know when you will need to call on it.

September 11 Remembrance Prayer

Monday, July 26th, 2010

The third and final article in our three-part series:

This is the last in a series of three articles on “Finding Your Purpose in Life”.   Article one, “Discovering Your Gifts” explored personal prayer and opening your heart to listen to God, letting go of your need to control.  Article two, “Finding Your Passion” encouraged you to reflect on your personal gifts and to discover your uniqueness in God’s eyes.  The possibility that God might be calling you to become a Catholic sister, brother or priest was also introduced.  Now, as you experience a deeper communion with God, your heart becomes more receptive to hearing God’s desire for you.  This article will explore how this openness allows you to hear God’s call to service on a deeper level by following in Jesus’ footsteps with the possibility of becoming a sister, brother or priest in religious life.

First of all, you can’t choose what you don’t know!  So if in the course of your prayer time with God you continue to reflect on religious life as even … continue reading…

Article 2 in a three-part series:

Inviting people to use their gifts by becoming a religious sister – How God calls us to channel our passion – Introducing religious life as a viable life option.

Finding Your Passion

Do you sense something missing in life?  Is your work or life situation not meaningful enough despite your accomplishments and possessions?    Could it be that the difference you make when you are helping people in need feels more life-giving than your work week?  Do you feel more authentic when you give of yourself to help others?  PAY ATTENTION!  Perhaps you are being called to find purpose in life in another way, to do more with your life.  These thoughts are ways in which God invites us to be and do “more” by becoming a Catholic religious sister, nun, priest or brother.

Introducing the idea of becoming a sister, brother or priest may seem extreme to some and may even scare someone away.  Being called was even startling for Mary.  St. Luke writes that she was “deeply troubled,” and asked questions – wouldn’t you?  This calling comes as … continue reading…

The first in a series of vocation articles:

Finding your passion-Using your gifts-How do you recognize the gifts God gave you? How do you understand how to use them? What is your passion? Guidance to the many young people in college and university who are unsure of their current path in life and those already working in various professions who are looking for more meaning in their life.

Discovering Your Gifts

Living the word of God each day by using your spiritual gifts and passion for your faith is a challenging but remarkable way of life.  Letting God truly take over the reigns of your life is a process that ultimately enriches the well being of those whose lives you touch and brings joy to your soul and life.  Learning to ultimately trust God is liberating.

To begin the growth of God’s spirit within, you must first come to understand the passions and spiritual gifts God has given you.  Thus begins a period of reflection and inner searching through prayer, trust in God’s mercy and love for you, and a desire to … continue reading…

Please pray for those in our country who cannot experience the independence they deserve.

When we celebrate Independence Day, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain, we generally focus on barbeque, fireworks, and parades.

This year, as you attend to those holiday rituals, be sure to take the time to pray for those in our country that are currently fighting for their independence…perhaps fighting for their lives, for their survival.

Right now, in OUR country (not only in other countries), there are young people being held captive as slaves to the immorality of man. They are unable to enjoy the freedoms that our military men and women fight to provide. They are unable to make their own decisions, as we all enjoy. They are being trafficked against their will.

The spirituality of the Sisters of Bon Secours encompasses the charism of compassion, healing, and … continue reading…
