During the Women’s Wellness Retreat this weekend here at the Bon Secours RCC, the attendees of the retreat were abuzz about the evening’s concert: a young flutist with an amazing story and talent. Amidst the buzz, I was able to capture a few quality moments with Sister Elaine, at which point we entered a conversation about living life with all its busy-ness and finding ways to keep God present in it.
Recently while driving I heard a song on the radio. The solo was a trumpet, and it was beautiful music. After a few minutes of contemplative listening, I suddenly realized there was another instrument, my very favorite sound, in the background.
The second instrument a French horn was playing opposite the trumpet. No matter what melody the trumpet was playing, the horn was playing a completely different melody.
As I continued to listen, I realized that is what goes on in my own life. I’m busy about many things, and all the while, in the background, God is playing God’s special melody that accompanies, supports and embellishes my life. God comes along and plays His own melody for my life.
Separately of one another, both instruments and both melodies were beautiful. Together, there was a richer beauty that was much deeper. Without God’s song in my life, my song would not be the same.

Sister Elaine Davia, CBS, plays the French Horn, along with her ministries as a Nurse and our Formation Director.
Perhaps, it is the whisper of God’s sweet voice that resonates through Sister Elaine’s soul , down her arms to her hands and fingers, finally out through the music she plays for people. It is His own song to her soul, that eminates out to those who listen.
