Outreach: Reaching out to those in need
Though the Sisters of Bon Secours in the United States are best known for the hospitals, hospices, assisted living, and nursing care facilities where we provide compassionate care and emotional and spiritual support to anyone in need, our mission of caring for the whole person extends well beyond the walls of the institution. In her writings on social justice, Sr. Justine Cyr, a former provincial and superior general of the Sisters of Bon Secours and a spiritual director, explains in simple but powerful words, "Bon Secours’ purpose will never change. It is a religious purpose concerned with our neighbor who suffers. The Constitution of the Sisters of Bon Secours states,
‘Whatever form our service takes, all people should benefit without distinction of social situation, race, or religion…For us, the struggle for a more humane world is not an option. It is an integral part of spreading the Gospel…The cry of the poor shall find an echo in our lives.’" That echo takes on many forms, each driven by the needs of the people who are served. In fact, the Sisters of Bon Secours are rather unique in the way we develop programs and ministries to serve the disadvantaged. Before we begin, we talk with the people who live in the community and ask what it is they feel is most needed. The sisters and lay partners who work in these ministries are passionate about the people we work on behalf of. We invite you to share our stories and thoughts and ask yourself if our passion resonates within you as well.
